Salute to Mackinnon
In 1888 Quinton MacKinnon discovered the pass from Lake Te Anau to Milford Sound. The route now known as the world famous Milford Track. A stone cairn with a memorial plaque for MacKinnon appears through the mist as you reach the top of the switchback path to the pass.
A sense of accomplishment is felt that I’m sure only touches on the achievements of MacKinnon in times when everything was completed with immense hardship in comparison to today’s standards.
There at the base of the monument is a kea, skipping about in the tussock grass. Sometimes even perching on top of the cross, in his look at me fashion that only the cheeky Kea commands.
Original – Oil on Canvas.
