  Wiremu Patara te Tuhi belonged to Ngati Mahuta, sub tribe of Tainui in the Waikato.
Son of the great warrior chief Paratene Maioha.  He was closely related to Tawhiao, 2nd maori king to whom he was secretary, advisor and companion.  He was buried  on Taupiri mountain.
