The kereru or nz wood pigeon

(hemiphaga novaeseelandiae)

Early settlers to NZ  referred to this bird as a 'butcher

bird' because of its splendid white apron.

Also known as the kukupa and kuku, this brightly coloured pigeon is now the only remaining native bird with a bill large enough to disperse the fruit of New Zealand’s larger tree species.

This collection allows me to explore the fun there is to be had with language, symbolism and entrenched beliefs in a quirky, humorous way.
